What is the Political Courage Test?

North Carolina State Legislative Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Yes b) Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
No c) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
Regarding question c - in the event that a person is unable to afford a procedure that is safe for the patient, then I would support the use of public funds.

1) Budget Stabilization:Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing North Carolina's budget.

No a) Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
No b) Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees?
No c) Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients?
Yes d) An income tax increase on any tax bracket?
As the economy cycles, it is possible that in a serious economic downturn, difficult budget decisions would have to be made. Today in NC, we have a budget surplus. In that case I could support furloughs, buyouts, or even layoffs. Such actions should only happen under the mst severe of circumstances.
Yes a) Do you support any limits on campaign contributions to state candidates?
Yes b) Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Yes c) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
No d) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
I am opposed to PACS and corporations donating to campaigns for office. Their donations can sometimes give them unreasonable access to a candidate, or worse, incumbents.
No a) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
No b) Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
Yes c) Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
Yes d) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
C - This would depend entirely on the nature of the crime committed. D - I am opposed to separating families. I support secure borders. I also am determined that our country needs to re-look at what is required to obtain legal residence in our country. We need and depend on immigrants, especially in WNC where immigrants frequently do the agricultural and service related jobs. Also, there needs to be immigration reform.
Yes a) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes b) Do you support lowering state taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
No c) Do you support reducing state government regulations on the private sector?
Yes d) Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
No e) Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
Yes f) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of North Carolina?
In each case, I can imagine circumstances that could cause me to relook at each of the questions in this section. Yes/No answers don't always work. Regarding e - Welfare recipients who suffer the illness of addiction should be helped, not stripped of the support their children (if they have them) or other dependents might need to survive.
Yes a) Do you support adopting federal education standards in North Carolina?
Yes b) Do you support state funding for charter schools?
Yes c) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from North Carolina high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
Yes d) Do you support increasing funding for the state education budget?
No e) Do you support North Carolina's "Innovative School District" program?
a. Our community needs to know that no matter a child lives, they will find similar standards/benchmarks. b. I believe that Charters should continue to be funded at the p/p rate. Unless they are a hybrid public/private school. c. Having a post-secondary education is an advantage for the student and the economy. Win/Win e. No. Such programs have been shown to fail wherever they exist. Too, the State government should not have the right to wrest a school away from the local governing agency and its taxpayers.
Yes a) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
Yes b) Do you support state government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
Yes c) Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
d) Other or expanded principles:
No a) Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
Yes b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
No c) Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom?
Yes d) Should a license be required for gun ownership?
I support red flag laws, heightened / thorough background checks. I do not support taking weapons away from owners unless they are identified by red flag regulations.
Yes a) Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
Yes b) Do you support Medicaid expansion through North Carolina's health care programs?
No c) Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
Yes d) Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
No e) Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
The Constitution guarantees religious freedom. That said, I have had contact with groups opposed to vaccinations. I need to learn more about their work. In the meantime, I believe that vaccines save lives.
Yes a) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in North Carolina's anti-discrimination laws?
Yes b) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in North Carolina's anti-discrimination laws?
Yes c) Do you support greater efforts by North Carolina state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
Yes d) Do you support the removal of Confederate monuments from public spaces?
d. I would like to see Confederate monuments become part of a State wide museum of the War Between the States. I think Western North Carolina would make a great home for such a museum. WNC was a place that saw the dissolution of families when siblings went gray or blue. Here in WNC, we would make a great home for such monuments and the story that they would help tell. Of course, such a museum would be a public space.
Health care is a matter of great concern to our fellow North Carolinians. I hear that over and over. Public Education needs to be fully funded from universal pre-school through the first two years of trade/technical school (community college - if needed.)
